I just spoke with Byron Young at 2 p.m. today (4/4) and here is the scoop, as you heard on our radio show 3 weeks ago!

They sent into action and emergency plan to open seasons early and to sit in the public NY State Register for 45 days the following.

Fluke year round 7 fish at 17 inches,
Porgy year round 50 fish at 10 inches
Striped bass open April 15th through December 15.

The deal is, this emergency plan allows them to open the season as they wanted too.... for 90 to 100 days, which in reality takes them past the usual opening dates and therefore they will then let the emergency plan just die off since the seasons will be already be open by then.

Technically speaking??

If you can find a fluke tonight you can keep it. If you can find a porgy you could keep it and striped bass will open April 15th only because of this emergency plan. Happy hunting in 42-degree water temps.

I just spoke with Michael Fraser in the Press Office for the DEC in Albany. He has assured me that the press office and the office of the commissioner has NOT released this season opening info officially yet, but he did say he had heard the releases may be going out on Monday or Tuesday.

Technically he was NOT sure if the seasons, are in fact open, and said I should defer to what Byron Young had told me this afternoon from my first posting.

I have left a message for Byron at his home and hopefully he will call me tonight or tomorrow to clarify the season openings. Good thing the water is so cold, other wise we would be catching fluke and not knowing the true story.

Lots of work on my part, but as always we are factual and correct in our reporting and want to be the same this time around as well.

RJ:

another web site says that the DEC Commisioner passed these new regulations!!!!

now they just have to wait for the legislature to sign it which is definite and could happen today!!!

RJ

That is what I am saying. Byron Young said technically it can be official...BUT Mike Fraser the in the Press Office said they are not aware of it and will not be sending out any notices till Monday or Tuesday. i won't even guess on the web site, but if it is who I think it is, it would not be the first time they have been inaccurate or early on a release. This is why I make the extra calls to be sure.:D

can we have a spelling bee contest too? =P

by the way, when did the fluke season end last year? (I was still catching fluke in the middle of nov last year down in Fire Island.) =x

RJ

It ended Oct. 31 I believe

Fluke
04-06-2003, 11:15 AM
TS- RJ is right with the date. Most of the Party boats out of Captree had given up on the fluke by the 15th of Oct. and switched to Porgys and Seabass. There were ocassional fluke caught as by catch. I hope you didn't keep the ones you caught in Nov.:o

RJ

Most boats gave up on Fluke in Sept.!!

Fluke
04-06-2003, 06:24 PM
RJ- The point I was trying to make, was the party boats gave up on the fluke, before the season ended, because there weren't enough fluke around to make it worthwhile. With that in mind, an open season, isn't that much of a gift to Rec. fishermen. I think we have enough controls on our fishing to asure future stocks. I'm not that sure about the Comms.

Rj-
Hey -you aren't the only Ham out there-yup I want to be a radio personality also-LOL

Fluke-The only place where the fluke bite stayed hot was Shinnecock in the ocean.I think the open season is bogus also unless we get a "fluke" of a season:p :p :p

Lky- As a radio personality, I sure hope you can sing. All the comedian spots have been filled.
To the best of my knowledge, many of the boats in Shinnecock also gave up on the fluke before the seaon ended and switched to Seabass and Blacks. There were some stray fluke caught off the castle, but no great numbers.
Boy, am I glad they opened the season now. As soon as I shovel out my driveway......... LOL

I guess I'll need snow chains for the trailer. At least we won't need ice for all the fluke and porgies.

Rockfish- You better bring an auger in case you have to cut a hole in the ice. This sh---y weather is because they opened the fluke and porgy season too soon.

Rockfish
04-07-2003, 05:17 PM
No, actually this s###y weather is the reason they opened the season earlier. How else can they increase our harvest and give us equity with the comms, without actually increasing our harvest. Remember that we are all catching our limits every day, and no one can document that we aren't. And they'll tell you that they gave us an increase. Seems equitable on paper.

You hit it right on the head. I think next year, we're getting something, in addition to new regs. I think it's called vaseline.

BigBrewDude

Fluke, if we're lucky, we'll get some vasaline.
