New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) will be conducting a Free Family Fishing Event on Saturday, May 3 at the City of Albany's Six Mile Waterworks. This event serves as a kick off/press event for DEC's statewide implementation of the I FISH NY initiative. The ultimate goal of I FISH NY is to increase fishing participation in New York State and connect people to the outdoors.
DEC will stock the lake with trout for this year and the program will be held in connection with the stocking of trout into the lake.
Name of Event: DEC I FISH NY Family Fishing Event
Date of Event: May 3, 2008
Time of Event: 10 am - 2 pm (rain or shine)
Location: Six Mile Waterworks (The park fronts on a section of Fuller Road between Washington Avenue and Central Avenue).
What's Provided: DEC will have rods available for loan to those that do not have them (about 100 rods). Since supply is relatively limited people are also encouraged to bring freshwater fishing tackle if they have it. DEC will also provide bait, bobbers and hooks until supplies run out.
Dignitaries Expected: Albany Mayor Jerry Jennings, DEC Executive representatives include Patricia Riexinger (Director of Division of Fish, Wildlife and Marine Resources), Steve Hurst (DEC Fisheries Chief) and other various DEC representatives.
Event Details: Six Mile contains a variety of warmwater fish species. DEC staff will be stocking the reservoir with up to 2,000 rainbow trout prior to the event. Staff will also be on hand "patroling" the reservoir to assist people who are new to fishing and will have stations staffed to assist people with knot tying, rigging up, etc. An area will also be set aside for people to learn how to use the spin-casting gear that we will be using.
Planned seminars include: Basic Trout Fishing @ 10:30 am and Basic Bass Fishing @ 12:00 pm.
