Joe or Capt Greg, I was fishing with Capt Greg on the golden eagle yesterday and our last stop, we started catching all types of fish. When I caught a bergal and toss it back in the water it would float, I not sure how deep the water was, but I guessing 120+ feet, correct me if I wrong Greg. Now back to the question, the bergal would float, now if I was to catch a small blackfish or seabass from the depth, would it make it back to the bottom of the ocean or would it just float also?

It really depends on how fast you reel it up.When you reel them up fast their air blatter expands making them float. When we commercially fish for seabass in the fall and keep the fish alive for sale, we reel them up very slow and even stop reeling every 10 or 20 feet to keep the blatters from expanding.

when you fish in waters deeper than 70 feet this usally happens. If you feel its a small fish reel in a litle bit slower and the fish should sound rite back to the bottom after release.

Sam, what Joe says is correct, the air bladder expands when the fish rises to the surface quickly. As you probably noticed, the large bladder coming out of the Lings mouth when it comes to the surface.
The wreck we were fishing sits in about 150 +/- ft and rises at the top of the wreck to somewhere around 100 ft or so. Most of the fish in this deep of water will experience the air bladder expansion. we have even seen some Ling actually float off of a badly hooked fish and float away resulting in a lost fish. Thats a bummer for the guy who just reeled it up 150ft or so.

It is the bladder for correct spelling and yes they can and do get the bends from deep water

This also happens down south with groupers and snappers. They sell a syringe(hope i spelled it rite ) like needle to vent air out the fish from the deep for release.I do it with Seabass in the fall, I have a large needle and insert it the third scale behind the vent(ass) of the fish. This lets the air out of the fish so it swims naturally , not upside down. This is called VENTING, or POPPING your fish.

Tell me this isnt the worst case of CABIN FEVER you have ever seen.Hey Greg at least you can fish in JERSEY now. We gotta wait another week.Lets keep this on the topic. I love reeling in big tog from the deep when their eyeballs pop out.And when Seabass BLADDERS come out of their mouths.I think I spelled it correct this time,, haha

Would love to Greg, but I am in the process of changing a steering ram in my boat. It was a total nightmare getting the old one out, I had to cut the hoses and cut the pin where it goes into the rudder .I got a new ram and pin coming by Saturday, then I have to have new fittings put on the hoses I had to cut.So sunday will be fix her up day.My season opens up on the 8th for tog So I gotta be ready. Thank You, I WILL see you in the fall for some canyon fishing. If your ever come this way, this summer your more than welcome to come on the floating fish killing machine. We kill em good:)

A nice new website design, but still no spellchecker...so you can't get two(sic) fussy.
