usally on the full moon in april,But sometimes its later. It really goes by water temp. When you start to see the spearing show up it wont be long as the squid feed on them.

Whole fresh squid work well for stripres off the surf. You can get them at any fish market or commercial fish dock.

Whole squid is still a very popular bait up in cape cod.It is used as much as we use clams here.Very few people use it around here and I dont know why, It works well. Everyone is so hooked on clams and bunker now a days , but fresh whole squid is a winner.Do you know what the shinnecock indians called striped bass in the day SQUID HOUNDS. sO WHAT DOES THAT TELL YOU
As far as rigging a whole squid for surfcasting it is a double hook rig same as if you were going for fluke, but you use 2 8/0 octopus hooks. One hook in the furthest end of the squid(tail end) and the other hook rite into the eyes of the squid. Fish this on a fishfinder rig with a 24-30 inch leader and what ever lead you need to hold bottom and your in business.
This really works, I have personally landed bass in the high 30-low 40lb class on whole squid.Give it a shot this year and make sure it is FRESH, not pink frozen crap. This was a well kept secret for a long time, but being I dont surf fish anymore ill let the cat out of the bag. Try it you will be amazed.

Whole fresh squid is best cleaned, stuffed with ricotta and a beaten egg, with marinara sauce.
Forget bait...eat that stuff, you'll never have the chance to get fresher.
