If a neophyte has the correct equipment and is interested in beginning to partyboat fish for fluke* what are the key things you''d tell him to hasten his technique development?

Avoid weekends and start on a bay boat. No keepers but alot of action. Deep water/rough conditions can make detecting fluke a bit of an art* but the keepers more plentiful.
