Shock Leaders

When is the appropriate time to use shock leaders. I always use them for cod fishing but seldom think about using them any other time.

Shock Leaders

When using shock leaders* my preferred way is to use the improved Albright knot which allows me to reel on the leader but in the heat of battle I have used swivels.
What is the recommendation about joining to braid?. I have done both but I have wondered if there are other situations where one method is simply better.

Connection knot or Albright knot will workwith braid to mono connections. The Bob McNally book "Knots & Rigs" is super!!

Jay* it is very important to use a barell swivel when throwing lures. This will keep your line from becoming tangeled.
