I was recently on a party boat in Mass doing some cod fishing. We had a great time doing the macho thing and cranking those babies all day from over 200 ft. of water.

There were two guys on board using electric reels. One won the pool. Quite frankly* I felt that while I had no problems with the way anyone fished* those reels gave them an unfair advantage.

I decided that I will not enter any pool again in that situation.

Any thoughts on this????

I wouod not be happy about a pool being won by somebody using equipment other than the rest of the boat...that's for sure.

I don't see where the reel has much to do with it. I've watched guys with electric reels get out fished by guys with conventional tackle.

1) The big fish still needs to swim up to you're bait.

2) You have to feel the bite and hook it.

My guess is that this guy still would have won the pool with or without the electric reel. He was in the right place at the right time. It was just his lucky day.

The electric reel gives an unfair advantage in that he can tirelessly fish all day while the rest of us occasionally have to take a break. Just by being able to be in the water more* gives him an advantage.....lucky or not.

Let me ask you this. If I were hosting a raffle and I offered you a choice between 5 free tickets and twenty* which will you take and why?

I never though of it that way but Jay has a point. I once met a guy who said his "secret" to winning bluefish pools was to use 60lb test so he can horse in as many fish as possible especially during a blitz giving him a better chance.

Well then Jaye to you he has an advantage. To me 200' of water ain't shiite. I'ts about 65 cranks on the handle. I drop and reel all day and never take a break. I'm not a tough guy or trying to sound hard* but when I fish I go balls out. The only thing I hate about fishing is three horns at the end of the day.

Now Jaye you're standing next to a little girl with her new pink Barbie spincaster rod. You have you're best fluke set-up. She says Daddy I think somethng is pulling on my pole. Wham 7# fluke beats out you're 4#er fo the pool. Who had the advantage and who was just lucky that day?

To answer you're question I'd take the 20 tickets. But lets compare apples to apples

You took the 20 tickets because it increased your odds. Even if you are Tarzan you will not get your line in the water as often as a guy with an electric reel. It is apples to apples statistically. It is about odds. That is stats 101 bro.

Jaye buddy! You say tomato I say tomahto* we could debate all night but IMO he won the pool not because of the reel but because it was his day.

If I'm standing right next to you with a 3:6:1 reel and you have a 6:4:1 Does that mean you win the pool because you have a faster reel and can reel up and drop down more than me. No we both have the same chances because the big fish might like my presentation better.

I took the 20 tickets because it was just pure common sense.

OK Quan....we will agree to disagree on this one. I was hoping that someone else supported your perspecive* so I will wait.

We are really talking at two different levels. There is no doubt that everyone has a chance to win the pool. That is luck. We simply don't agree that the odds are in the favor of the person who is in the water the longest.

But don't kid yourself. Find the smartest person you know and ask him the results of you using common sense in selecting the 20 tickets. IT INCREASED YOUR ODDS.

Whenever we meet the first beer is on me but you still have to find support for your common sense.

By the way* I m not suggesting that an electric reel suddenly makes a neophyte a sharpie. I also recognize that that neophyte has just as good a chance as anyone else of winning the pool on a single event.
However* my comments stand over the longterm. That is what makes a trend.

Well Jaye* you could just try taking steroids* or maybe steal the batteries when the guy isn't looking.

If you're convinced electric reels create an advantage* then i suppose you should buy one...They're at Walmart for 75% off this week* but don't tell RJ.

You could always move his pole to a bad spot on the boat to take away his advantage.
