I'm pretty well versed on the inshore side of things but was looking for some feedback on tilefishing. I did target tilefish for about hour one time while anchored up during a tuna trip. I bagged a nice fish around 14lbs and I also choked a nicer fish about 300 feet off the bottom while I was reeling it up :( The rig I was using was a standard hi-lo codfish rig with 6/0 Sproats attached to #50lb braid that was spooled on a Penn 113HLW which was attached to one of my old school 8' Ugly Stik Codfish (& tuna jigging) rods. For an hour that set-up was fine* but I could see it taking its toll on my body during a full-day tilefish excursion.

So here are my questions:

On the terminal end of things what do you like? I'm interested in hook selection* teasers* baits* etc..

As far as hardware goes my rods are accounted for. As far as reels go* I'm all ears to what you guys think is the best possibility for less than $200. Thanks!!

BTW* Rich it was nice talking to you briefly at the Flea Market today.

Crabcake* Now your talking my type of fishing:thumb:
Rigging- a two or three hook (6/0-7/0 octopus or baitsaver hook) dropper loop rig works great with glow beads on top of the hooks. Tie it with 60lb flouro with a 100 lb barrell swivel that goes to your main line of 80 lb braid.

An electric reel is great you can pick one up for under $400. Push the button and reel em up.We use sash (window) WEIGHTS. you can cut them in half or use them whole depending how deep you are fishing.
Bait- skimmer clam* Squid* Bergall strips or chunks.
Try to stay away from new or full moons while fishing for tiles as the current is to strong. These fish stay on the bottom and rarely chase bait up. So make sure you are on the bottom and have enough lead to hold. The braid is great because you are fishung from 200-500 feet of water and you can pack more line of braid then mono.
Any other questions just feel free to ask*** joe

The best setup is a 6 foot 50-80 lb bent but rod with a 30-50 penn international in the rod holder with the electric reel. On a private boat!! On a party boat a 7-8 foot rod with the electric reel and hang on.
