Rich is too busy with talking about the new Super bowl Champ* G men. Joe how do you rig up for blackfish* do you have 1 hook or 2 hooks* We had a thread about the different between north shore and south shore hookup.

Hey sam how are you* I mostly fish with a two hook rig for togs. The reason being is sometimes the second hook snags the fish under the chin when one hook wouldnt work as well. There are many options for tog fishing *you just have to adapt to the way the fish are biting. But the standard SNAFU rig with both hooks in one piece of crab will always do good. Calico crabs in the early fall followed by white crabs in the winter.(DEC-JAN).

There is the "science" of fishing and then there is the "art" of fishing. "Adapting to how the fish are biting" would fall under the "art" of fishing* and this is not so easily taught. The art of fishing comes through experience* but it is never a guarantee that fish will behave consistently.
As an analogy* when I first began my teaching career* I would often ask my mentors ("the experts") about the "best" way to teach. More often than not* their answer was: "Do what works for you." I didn't find that answer very helpful because I lacked the experience to even recognize if something was working or not. And what worked yesterday wasn't working today.
I guess what I'm saying is that it takes experience to recognize when to adapt and how to adapt to fishy behavior. The "art" of fishing never comes easily. But take this for what its worth* coming from someone whose fishing mentors are Mickey and Goofy.
In any case* I look forward to trying the "two hooks in the same crab" method to see if I get any better results. The "science" of that method seems to make sense* especially for a species of fish that are more difficult to hook.
Now my question is: "When (and where) do blacks start going for clam instead of crabs?
Check out this "expert":

Great thread. I tie a pinhookers rig but I will like to know the following:
1. how far apart do you string the two hooks?.
2. Do you use different leader lengths on the same rig?
3. I was once told by John Richey that black fish are not sight feeders* so I am wasting money using Fluoro. How do you feel about that?
4. Years ago I fished a lot with Charlie Kennedy. His favorite bait was conch. I do not see many people using conch anymore. Any thoughts on that???

jay* I tie my hooks about 8 inches apart with a dropper loop in the middle.
Fluro* I never use it
blachfish will turn onto clams in the winter when the water gets cold also in the springtime* conch is also a very good winter and spring bait.

Thanks Joe....I am looking forward to using this set up with conch this Spring and green crabs next Fall.
what size hook you use?
How long is the leader on the bottom hook?
Do you use this type of setup for any other type of fishing.? I was wondering whether that would work with clams on cod and haddock.

Jay i use a 3/0 octopus hook* I keep the rig as close to the sinker as possible.I have caught other fish on this rig like seabass* porgies etc* but i only use this rig for tog.

Joe can you describe your fluke rig? Do you use fluoro here? What is the length of the leaders etc. What size hooks? Do you ever use circle hooks?

The fluke rig I made up 3 years ago is 2 dropper loops (hi-lo). A 30# swivel 2 dropper loops using FLURO with a bucktail rivit on the top hook* second hook (bottom) plain* then a round sinker for weight usally 1-30z on a coastlock snap. bait with spearing or searobin strips. Kicks ass:uzi:

Yes surf* I snell one hook on one end of the leader then snell a second hook to the other end * followed by a dropper loop in the middle. The whole rig is a piece of 50# leader material tied to a 75# barrell swivel* at the bottom of the leader I tie a perfection loop for the sinker*Then rite above the sinker loop I tie a dropper loop* Now i take the two hook rig and do a loop to loop from the leader to the rig. i will try to put up some photos.

Rich...last year we discussed the possibility of a rig tying seminar. I think this discussion with Joe has just given me a reason to ask you to again consider this before the Spring season begins.

joe what is your fav plug for early season strippers around reynolds channel area?
cowkiller
02-23-2008, 12:58 PM
Cant go wrong with bucktails* 1-1 1/2 oz* white with # 70s uncle josh porkrind. Also soft plastics * fin-s-fish or sluggos on lead heads work great as well.
Try casting under the dockline or at the bridges* and dont forget the dropoffs around the marshes. Outgoing tide is usally better for this. Also cant forget about the old 5 1/2 inch black and silver rebel.
If your looking for larger bass big DANNY type lures(surface) will cull some of the larger fish from the marshes. Hope this helps you out**joe:thumb:

Ah know that. i could tie a hook onto the opposite end* but I want to snell it the same way. I have seen the Asians do it. I just can't figure out how to do it.

That is exactly why I started pushing for these sessions months ago. Do you know when is the next one scheduled and is it going to be in a more convenient location for those of us who reside in Suffolk County?
