I have a 60 minute video on how to build rods from start to finish with Hank Altenkirch...one of the best..$10...it will cover everything for you

Rich's video is a good referance. If you have any specific questions I'd be more than happy to help.
A good striper rod would be a Lamiglas BBT 857S. This rod is 7 foot and will handle all bait and jigging needs. Another good choice would be a Lami BMB 963 cut from the tip. This is a great general purpose rod. Both are fiberglass and will provide years oif service. Should run around $150 for parts

The rods I built on TV have been Seeker blanks which are very very good and less expensive than the Lami's I believe

The Seeker blanks are good as well. BT 30 or BT 50 are the model #'s. Both makes are Fiberglass are in the same price range. Graphite will run about 2X's as much.

i guess you build rods not to save money but for the experience of using something you made to catch something you love- hopefully a personal best fish- i guess since i never used a rod worth more than a hundred bucks thats maybe why i dont understand or know the difference between a 70 dollar uglystick or a lamiglass - as you guys reffered to

thanks for the info

If you build a custom yourself you can pick your own colors* better guides* and placement of reel seat to fit you best.
You will save some bucks by doing it yourself as most quality customs can go from $300 - $500 depending on the type of rod and parts.
To get started will you have to lay out for other stuff like epoxy* glue* and a drying machine* and some sort of jig to wrap on. You can make one yourself if your handy* or cut V's into a cardboard box.

Believe me..you can feel the diff in a 70 to 150 dollar rod not to mention a custom at $200 or more...BIG difference
