View Full Version : Kayak recommendations?
I am considering buying a kayak for fishing. Does anyone have any recommendations on the type that works best for fishing?
Thanks*

I saw a really nice set up at sports authority and dicks* with built in anchor systems. You should check those out.
I had not thought about checking out those stores. There are some close by so I will stop by this weekend and look at them. Thanks for the suggestion.

Went kayaking in the Adirondacks this Summer and would like to find some recommendations for local kayaking - North or South Shore.

Well...I have this stream going through my back yard.....
Just kidding.
How about Lake Ronkonkoma* not far from Islip.
Or maybe the mouth of the Nissaquoge River.
Mt. Sinai Harbor sees its share of kayakers* too.
Look me up in the Spring if you need a buddy.

There is a store Glacier Bay in Northport Great people and very experienced at kayak fishing. If you purchase from them they will give you access to the back of Northport Harbor for lauching. Before purchasing you can rent a kayak from them and decide what you like. If you are on the South Shore The Dinghy Shop in Amityville is a great place. They offer the same deal on renting.
Another really nice place to lauch from is Cold Spring Harbor.
Good luck in your search

Chuck*
There are alot of great kayaks out there for fishing. Some better then others but* before you buy anyone try it out. Some are more stable then others * and some are faster. There are alot of variables to consider* your weight* the type of fishing you plan on doing (fresh water* Salt back bays* or ocean? Do you want to paddle* or peddal? I fish from the back bays to the open ocean. I have found the peddle type kayak to suit my needs best. I am also one of the founding members of the only kayak fishing club in the NY area. If you or anyone have any questions on this great * and growing sport of kayak fishing post here or send me an E-Mail.

check out the WaveWalk (http://www.wavewalk.com/) catamaran fishing kayak.
I tested one out last month when I was driving through the Boston area. IT was very interesting. Takes a little getting used to but is very comfortable since you are in a somewhat normal sitting position.

I have a sit on top Cobra Tandem* I usually fish alone from it and it is very stable in Long Island Sound. I can also take my son out or anyone if I like.
