why is it that the fish seem to bite better during certain weather patterns.
as in high pressure vs. low pressure weather systems.
what effect does this have on the currents on the bottom.
and also during certain wind patterns.

The answer to your question can take on many forms and I know responses can vary by species. I'd love to hear what the experts have to say about this.
I began compiling logs of all my trips over 7 years ago and one common theme that I truly noticed for most inshore species is something that old time fisherman have believed for years.
"When the wind is from the east* fish bite the least* When the wind is from the west* fish bite the best!".
The old adage is definitely true on both the north and south shores even with some directional variations. For example* I've caught well with northwest and southwest winds* but tend to do very poorly when northeast or southeasternly winds exceed 15mph. Granted there are exceptions* especially in the surf where mild - moderate northeaster's can be just what the Dr. ordered for striper fishing* but for bottom fishing* I firmly feel that the validity of old adage is tough to dispute.
A few examples..
1. some fo the best porgy fishing is in the east winds..
2. some of the best togging is in hard west or northwest winds
3. Some of the best bottom fihsng is on the northerly winds form any quarter
4. bototm fish like sea bass* tog and porgies hate the SE or southerly roll of an approaching storm
Get on boats like the Capt. Al or Ocean Eagle for bottom fishing and ask her captain lots of questions to learn!!

Just don't bother Greg or Tommy while they're in the wheelhouse* LOL! They'll give you plenty of info at the dock.
As far as porgies biting in the East Winds* that is definitely true in the Jones Inlet area* but in the Peconics and LI sound* the East Wind might shut the scup bite off like a light switch. Like I said in my initial posts* responses will vary by location/species.
It's now time for me to get out for some tog* will report later. Not expecting much* but you never know.
I have had very good porgy fishing in east winds on the North Fork no problem..the key to the north fork is whether you have too much wind or not..it is not the direction

Do these sayings hold true for shore surf fishing? I feel like water temperature is a major factor. But if you were to rate these categories on fish biting* which would you think is the most important?
Wind* water temp.* air pressure* etc.?

Its different for each fish. the wind is a big factor while surf fishing.

Depending on where your surf fishing* those sayings can have some truth and in some instances be quite contrary to the boating anglers results. I attended one of RJ's surf fishing seminars @ Freeport a few years back and learned a lot about that :)
In general* I think its impossible to say which of the 3 is most important. I think a good bite will result from a preferred combination of the 3. Initially* I was going to say water temps* but if the winds are 30mph+* who cares if the temps are perfect* its going to be too rough to fish. On the flip side* you can have flat calm seas but if water temps are too hot or too cold* what good is it? This point can be disected by species as some fish are more adaptable to changes in conditions. I know others will chime in with some useful information on this one.
Bait* bait bait and structure in that order..oh yea and bait...find the baitfish you'll find some aciton

Humm... thanks all for the replies and thanks crabcake for the details. I remember reading someone's post saying that the full moon is no good for boat fishing... Im guessing thats also related to the type of fish and where you fish too. I tested this theory on surf fishing and I did just as well on full moon day and the next. I did notice that the current was pretty strong.

what i was trying to get at was.
why does the low presure system get the blackfish or bottom fish to go on a feed bag.
Most inshore species like the droping baramoter and offshore species favor the rising baramoter...

:} Yep* very true especially with the water temp around 58 degrees and off the moon :moon: * as in no ripping tides. Add a dropping barometer and you could have a banner day !!!!!!!!
