As a voracious beetle that kills trees – the Emerald Ash Borer – has emerged on New York’s doorstep* state Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) officials are announcing a conference call for outdoors and environmental writers. The call will take place 11 a.m. Monday.
The Emerald Ash Borer was recently discovered in Pennsylvania forests* about 75 miles from the New York border. It was first detected in Michigan in 2002 and has migrated across several Great Lakes states. The insect attacks Ash trees* which account for about 8 percent of all N.Y. trees.
New York officials will discuss the state’s stepped up ``Don’t Move Firewood!’’ campaign* as well as efforts to bait and monitor trees* and the idea of a firewood quarantine—as other state’s have implemented.
Participating in the conference call will be: Robert Davies* State Forester; Bruce Williamson* Chief of the Bureau of Private Land Services; and Dan Rourke* Lands and Forests Outreach Coordinator.
