Suspects apprehended for stealing from commercial lobstermans pots in Smithtown Marina

Three Long Island men were apprehended on July 22 and charged with allegedly stealing lobsters from licensed commercial lobstermen* the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) announced today. The three men were issued 12 tickets and charged with four misdemeanors* carrying penalties as high as $10*000. DEC Environmental Conservation Officers (ECO) worked in cooperation with the Smithtown Bay Constables in Smithtown Marina.
Commercial lobsterman Danny Saffieri contacted the Constables at 6:50 p.m. that night* reporting lobsters stolen from his traps (lobster pots). Constables transported the violators to the Stony Brook Yacht Club where ECO Nathaniel Mead questioned them. During the interview* Frank Nicosia claimed none of the lobsters came from ``Danny's pots.'' Three coolers were found full of lobsters.
The coolers contained 198 lobsters -- 153 undersized* 2 with eggs and just 43 legal sized -- weighing 200.1 pounds. The fair market value* estimated at $5.75 per pound* is roughly $1*150.

With the assistance of DECs Marine enforcement Unit* law enforcement inventoried and seized the suspects' boat for evidence. They are scheduled to be arraigned Aug. 13 in Suffolk County's 1st district court.
