The Cornell Cooperative Extension is looking for volunteers to help measure bluefin tuna. This educational facility has received a new commission to assist the National Marine Fisheries with their bluefin tuna statistics. Jeanette Klopchin of Cornell is responsible for meeting with anglers to weigh and measure the bluefin tuna catch. She is asking that she be called on her cell phone 631-603-4613 to report all bluefin landings. She will run to the dock with her tape measure and record the length* girth* and weight of these fish. This is part of a cooperative between Cornell and NMFS to get a better handle of the actual and not estimated sizes of landed bluefin and to better understand this fish stock.

These measurements will be compared with current length measurement conversion factors. Jeanette will cover the entire Long Island area and asks that anglers volunteer to assist her in this effort. The rules of the tuna permit are still valid allowing one schoolie fish and two from 47 inches to under 73 inches and according to our recreational tuna permits* all bluefin tuna are to be reported to the NMFS hotline.
You might already be familiar with the man who greets you at dockside with a long questionnaire on your day’s fishing. This too is used by NMFS to understand better what is being caught and where by all anglers.
