“THE SUFFERN SHOW” CELEBRATES 30 YEARS! VISIT THE TOYOTA WORLD FISHING & OUTDOOR EXPOSITION, MARCH 1-4, 2007, AT ROCKLAND COMMUNITY COLLEGE FIELD HOUSE, SUFFERN, NY
On March 1-4, 2007, The Toyota World Fishing & Outdoor Exposition will celebrate three decades of showcasing the best in sportsmen’s gear, expertise, and getaways. Known to fans as “The Suffern Show,” this year’s Expo will be a “Show of Discovery,” with hundreds of new products being featured. It’s an outdoor extravaganza, and it’s all happening at Rockland Community College Field House in Suffern, NY.
The Expo is the largest sportfishing show east of the Rocky Mountains. Whether you prefer bluewater or freshwater, you’ll find the “right stuff” at the Suffern Show. Rods and reels, lines and lures, they are all previewed here. Look for top fishing tackle manufacturers such as Shimano, Penn, Daiwa, Okuma, St. Croix and Quantum, all offering the latest in fishing technology. Numerous custom tackle makers will exhibit merchandise not available in stores or catalogues. “The Expo provides sportsmen with a once-a-year opportunity to discover new products, and there are hundreds here,” says Paul Fuller, show manager. “They can also receive special deals not available at any other time. This is an amazing opportunity.”
Walking through the displays is a sportsman’s dream. Here is a huge display of fishing boats, including Bass boats, aluminum and center consoles. Still more exhibits highlight guides, outfitters and lodges, taxidermists, and sporting organizations. All the ingredients for planning that perfect outdoor vacation are right here, under one roof.
Saturday is Saltwater Super Day, and no fisherman worth his salt will want to miss this event. There will be continuous presentations by a stellar lineup of the top names in saltwater fishing, including Rich Johnson, host of “The Fishing Line” television and radio show, Jim Hutchinson, executive editor of The Fisherman magazine, and Captain Jim White, noted saltwater captain and author, just to name a few. Many of the pros will conduct demonstrations at the Hawg Trough, a bass-filled pool, so you can see firsthand the techniques that make these anglers great. Test your own skill at the Fishing Simulator, which lets you attempt to “bag the big one” under a variety of fishing scenarios.
Also featured at the Expo is the legendary hunter and turkey calling champion, Matt Morrett. Morrett is on the professional staff at Hunter’s Specialties, and travels the nation conducting seminars on turkey and deer hunting. His techniques have been profiled on both ESPN and TNN, as well as in numerous magazine articles. He is a five-time winner of the World Champion Friction Turkey Calling title, five time U.S. Open Turkey Calling Champion, and a Grand National Champion. In the field, Morrett has completed a grand slam of all four subspecies of wild turkey. Morrett will be appearing on Friday and Saturday at the Expo. Joining Morrett to offer hunting tips will be Peter Fiduccia, the “deer doctor,”and black-powder expert Dave Ehrig.
The Suffern Show is also a family affair. Kids and adults alike will thrill to see Brody, a 1300-pound Kodiak bear, returning to the Expo by popular demand. Handler Jeff Watson has had Brody since he was an eight-week-old cub, and the two have a remarkable bond. Brody has not been at the Suffern Show since 2000, and has doubled in size. He is now a massive bear, standing nearly eight feet tall with a shoulder span of nearly four feet. But Brody is one cool Kodiak--every morning, he and Watson share an amazing bonding ritual, as Watson nuzzles his face between the bear’s huge jaws. Brody is extremely gentle, but Watson takes nothing for granted, and always respects him as a wild bear. Brody enjoys these public appearances, especially savoring his post-show reward--fried chicken, super-sized, of course! Meet this gentle giant and learn more about the habits and lifestyles of Kodiak bears.
Things get even wilder with the return of Talons, and their fascinating raptor display. Don’t miss your chance to see these fantastic birds up close, as Laurie Westman, master falconer explains the behaviors and lifestyle of these “masters of flight.”
Kids will especially enjoy meeting the Sugar Gliders, adorable marsupials (the mammals with the “pouch”) from Australia. Sugar Gliders are tiny enough to fit in your pocket, yet are able flyers. They have webbed “wings” connecting their arms and legs, much like flying squirrels. Come see these unusual creatures from Down Under.
In recognition of the 30th anniversary, there will be hourly drawings for prizes such as Berkley tackle, including soft bait and spools of fishing line. Also being drawn is a fishing trip to Crocodile Bay Lodge in Costa Rica.
Come celebrate with us! Bring the entire family to the “Suffern Show,” the Toyota World Fishing and Outdoor Exposition, March 1-4, 2007, at Rockland Community College Field House in Suffern, NY.
Hours are Thursday, 2:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., Friday, 1 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., and Sunday, 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission is $12.00 for adults, $3.00 for children under 12, with children under age five admitted free.
