New York State Department of Environmental (DEC) Commissioner Denise M. Sheehan today announced $700,000 in funding for the development of a new boat launching facility on Lake Champlain in the City of Plattsburgh, Clinton County. This project is funded through Stewardship Funds from the State Environmental Protection Fund (EPF). DEC will also provide its design expertise to ensure that the boat launch meets modern design standards for such facilities.
*Lake Champlain is a world-class bass fishery and Plattsburgh has been an extremely popular location for people to access this fishery,* said Commissioner Sheehan. *We look forward to working with the City of Plattsburgh to develop a new boat launching facility that can accommodate the large number of anglers and boaters that will greatly enhance the launching capability currently provided by the City.*
*The new boat launch will provide safe and easy access to Lake Champlain, which I know is of great interest to our area anglers,* said Senator Betty Little. *The new facility also will help attract more visitors, bringing new revenues into the city and the Plattsburgh region. I*m thankful for Commissioner Sheehan*s support of this project and look forward to seeing it develop over the next year.*
The boat launching facility is part of a larger scale waterfront revitalization project in the City of Plattsburgh. Although the site is still under design, preliminary plans call for a three lane launch ramp, boarding docks, staging areas and traffic pattern that will blend in with the improvements already made to this lakeshore location. It is estimated that the boat launching facility will be available for use during the 2008 boating season.
*The commitment of the Department of Environmental Conservation with the support of Governor Pataki has made a lasting contribution to the residents of the North Country in returning the waterfront to the people,* said City of Plattsburgh Mayor Jack Stewart. *Plattsburgh has been fortunate to have a Governor who did so much for our City in opening access to the wonders of Lake Champlain.*
*Former Mayors of Plattsburgh, particularly Mayor Daniel Stewart, also shared a vision of waterfront revitalization that Governor George Pataki has made possible with this project,* said Richard Perry of the City of Plattsburgh Planning Office. *A special acknowledgment to former Mayor Stewart and to local outdoorsmen John LaPlante and Bernie Jandrow, who dreamed of a state-of-the-art access to Lake Champlain in the 1960's. Let today*s announcement be the culmination of your efforts. The entire Plattsburgh community will benefit from this project.*
The Plattsburgh Boat Launch project is one of a number of boat launch projects that the Department has completed or cooperated with over the past 12 years. Since 1995, the DEC has been involved in 19 major boat launch rehabilitation projects totaling over $7 million.
