My first ice fishing trip and we filmed it with John Cominsky of the Valley Angler and Bill Evans of WABC weather. I think I found a new sport and the shore lunch was great. Thanks to John and all the Jig N Pig fishing club for their hospitality! I am going back for more this Wednesday! The ice was 18 to 22 inches thick and with 4 to 5 inches of snow on top of that the feet remained warm all day. Bill Evans and I also got to play with the power auger! Wow!
We had a couple of LMB both 12 inches or better and lots of sunfish, no keeper slabs though and one tiny crappie. I was very surprised at the absence of yellow perch...my favorite in the frying pan and no pickerel either.
I was looking more for action than quality since we had the TV cameras with us and neither Bill Evans or I had ever icefished before. We used shiners for the bass and maggots for the sunfish and jigging was much betetr than bait as far as results were concerned.
At noon it was time to cook and all the great guys from the Jig n Pig Ice Fishing Club started a bonfire for warmth (not really needed Sunday) and the Coleman stove produced hot dogs & kraut with hot sauce in stead of katsup, steak and peppers on Irish dough bread and not caught on tape were the Shaeffer and blackberry brandy.
The bite shut down at 11 a.m. with the exception of two kids who each had a bass over 3 pounds after high noon. I fished with John Cominsky of the Valley Angler in danbury and asI stated we opted for Kanosha over Candlewood for less of a crowd and more action over quality. There was a 13 pound walleye caught through the ice on Candlwood last week! No pics though but once I edit the tape I can take stills on digital off the computer from video. I may go back Wednesday for more if the weather cooperates.
