Over the last week or two many people have asked me what they need for an offshore party boat tuna trip. I am not an expert but I thought I would put a list together. Most likely Rich and Jeff can offer much more advice than me.
For starters you do not need to buy a rod and reel since they can be rented on the boats. However here is a list:
1) Stand Up rod 40 to 80 pound class, 5'6" to 5'9"
2) Two speed lever drag reel like an Okuma Titus T50W with strike drag set at 25% of line strength
3) Quality mono 50 to 80 pound test
4) Quality flourocarbon leader material 60#
5) 7/0 and 8/0 quality hooks
6) 200# barrel swivels
7) light tackle outfit 12# test for squid and Mahi Mahi
8) squid jigs- floating and sinking
9) 1/4 -1/2 ounce bucktails for Mahi Mahi
10) 4/0 outfit with 50# mono for jigging
11) 8 to 12 ounce diamond jigs
12) 5 to 7 ounce parachute jigs with assist hooks
13) gimbal belt
14) 10 to 16 ounce bank sinkers
15) boots
16) foul weather gear
17) motion sickness medication
18) clothing for both warm and cold temperatures
