Many other web sites are all abuzz about park and pemit fee increases for 2003. I spoke with the NY State parks today. I was asked to keep it off the record because nothing has changed and they have NOT received word from Albany about any fee changes or plans at all, so any speculation could be wrong info.

While some may or may NOT change, NY state parks asked me not to go crazy on the subject as it is all still up in the air. There is no use talking about it, speculating or guessing because anything we say could end up being misinformation.

I was assured that when the word does or does NOT come from Albany...we will be the first to know about it and the parks will come on the radio to talk about it and answer any of your questions.

Do NOT believe what you read anywhere else. Remember all the gossip about the striped bass reg's...we gave you the straight scoop when it was a scoop!:D

RJ-
With the tremendous budget deficit Pataki's got to get money from everplace that he can-Look what he did to college tuition and school budgets-I'm not blaming him since he's between a rock and hard place (same with Bloomberg) but I don't think anything will be sacred esp. permit fees

The college tuiton was a shame. State colleges as with state high schools should be free to every US citizen:!:

Whoever you spoke with spoke out od turn. I will call again there tomorrow to verify. What they told you may be what they are expecting...but until confirmation from Albany comes down nothing can be confirmed

The state parks said it was premature to speak on it and asked me to hold off. However, Surfsanity was on the money! I just called NY State Parks in Belmont Lake office and spoke with the permits office. I called there myself minutes ago and was told the same thing. Obviously I am a little pss'ed off, being asked to hold of and it was premature because the official word has not come down from Albany yet...BUT if they can quote the price on the phone, they THEY have to live with the wrong info if in fact the prices do not go up.

The prices are as follows:

Empire Pass up from $49 to $59
4X4 up from $39 to $49
Overnight Fishing: Up from 15 tp $20
Caumsett: up from $25 to $30
Camp Hero: still inthe air...you may not need one at all!
7 Day Fishing up from $10 to $15
Spearfishing: up to $49
Metal Detecting: $10
Regional Diving increased
Star Gazing Permit: They don't know yet what the price will be.

However...when was the last time Commissioner Castro did not raise something, anything she could anytime she had the chance.
:!:

Will we get better services for the increase?
 :!:

Will we get better services for the increase?

Absolutely Not!!! Thats the way it always has been and always will be. Pay more and get less.

These permit fee increases are outrageous. Are they earmarked for improvements in fishing access or does it just go into a general fund having nothing to do with fishermen? What do my NY State taxes pay for? Is my increased fee paying to fix potholes in Buffalo? What do any of us get for our money?

Did fishermen get any benefits when the Nassau Beach Permit went from $0. to $25.00 last year? We got zip. Nice move Mr. Suozzi.

Where is the added value from all of these fee increases? Where are the improved services? Politicians take note: You are not serving your constituents. Give us something tangible for our hard earned money or get the hell out of office!

from what i heard camp hero will have a daily fee to fish there which will be charged at the gate on your entering and if you leave they werent sure if a pass to get back in will be given but there will be a day fee and a night fee but like i said i dont know the cost this all came about due to the town of east hampton screwing with the goverment . the area was to stay natural no roads but they didnt listen and the area was almost lost due to not following up on the agreement made with big brother. got this info from the montauk surfcasters wed site

In speaking with the Adminstration of the State Parks, they said there may be no Camp Hero permit needed and you better get the Empire Pass. Then you can drive in and out of the Camp Hero 100's of times epr day.

I hate politicians. And so should you. Read this and you'll see why we should throw them all out of office.

Yes but when the majority of the public is well informed about what is happening things will change. The voting public will demand it once the public is informed.

called belmont lake sp 2/6/03 the lady said they heard today from "god" that the permits are about two weeks late (yea right) she said call back next wednesday, i said to her that the state isnt leaving much time to purchase them she said that she knows this but its out of their hands. so if you need a state permit the time period is down to a thirty day time period. i wonder if this is how they are going to control the amount of permits sold ? it seems the only people that will get them are fishing folkand i for one certainly hope so seeing that the mommy and kids gang will either give up trying to get one or they will just forget to go down

As long as the park offices are still open 7 days I think there's time to get a permit.

I sure hope enforcement is better this year. One morn last summer I tried to park in the RM5 lot a few minutes before 5am. get some fishing in before the beach crowd arrives. A park cop told me to leave. OK, I didn't argue. But I wish I had a dollar for everytime I saw kids hanging out there drinking all night! :!:

I just got off the phone with George Gorman, Jr. the Director of NY State Long Island Parks this morning (2/12). Here's the deal.

1. The permits will be availabe for sale next Wednesday February 19th through the permits office.

2. Prices did go up as we reported first here last week to the prices we reported.

3. There WILL be a need for the Camp Hero permit this season and they will issue only 1,000 of them

4. An Empire Pass will get you into Camp Hero during the day, but at night you will need the Camp Hero Permit for access and there will be no key needed anymore.

He will be appering on my radio show Saturday March 1.

 rich - i called the desk at montauk downs and the woman told me that there will NOT be a limit on the camp hero permits. your previous post states that there WILL be a 1000 pass limit. do you know something she doesn't? a 1000 passes is a lot but i'd still be interested in knowing about any limits. thanks.

Rich,

I didn't have a chance to call in but I heard most of the interview with him. You brought up many of the points I was going to ask him.

It's the enforcement issue that gets me the most. IMO there is no good reason other than busting chops that a bona-fide angler with a permit can't park in RM3 or RM5. Especially at night in the late off season (October thru December).

I wish I had $1 for every time I went to the Sore Thumb at night in October or November and saw kids hanging out down the rode drinking. Not even in 4x4's too. Yet if I try to go into 3 or 5 I have to worry about a ticket. :!:

I am going to get Parking Field 3 open for us in the fall!:D

Stan
03-17-2003, 09:31 AM
I also listened to your show. I didn't call cause you brought up everything I was going to ask. Like the stupid enforcement at the RM parking lots at night. Whats the big deal if we have a night fishing permit we should be able to park at any field at night. Also the none existant enforcement at all the 4X4 areas. I see nothing but surfers, swimmers, volleyball players, beer drinking teenagers and picnics on the beaches and hardly anyone with a fishing rod like the permit says your supposed to have. Thats why I no longer buy the 4X4 permit. I only buy the night fishing parking permit. The 4X4 is just a total waste of money.
I should have called for this question. Why can't we park at Caumsett State Park with the State Night Fishing Permit ? Why are they charging us $ to buy a completely different permit to park at a "STATE PARK". That makes no sense at all.
Rich I wish you the best of luck getting all of us access to the RM fields that have been off limits for to long.

RJ

While I am glad many of you listened and enjpyed the show, I still wish you would take the time to call even if I have brought up your questions. It is better for those in charge to hear it from the public and not just from me on these issues. Your question about Caumsett is great and I have included that in my letter to Geroge Gorman this morning.

Here is that letter:

Re: Saturday’s Radio Interview & Fishery Advisory Board

George,

Very nice speaking with you on Saturday and as always you did a great job. I would like to continue our discussion from Saturday about opening up Robert Moses 3 to surf fishing and parking in the fall of 2003. Rather than passing this off to the fish advisory board, I would like to take part in this one.

I would again officially request my addition to the current Fishery Advisory Board. I’ve been on the airwaves of the NY Metro area for nearly a decade and believe I represent the largest public group of all, as we’re in over 5.6 million homes through television and over 15 million possible homes through radio over three states. I bring to the table a fair mind free of politics and I enclosed my Professional Affiliations List as documentation of my contributions to the anglers of the great Empire State with my last letter dated February 3, 2003.

I have added a couple of the many E Mails I received after your interview on Saturday’s show. Here is a pair of them. I will look forward to hearing from you on this soon.

Thanks

Rich Johnson
