Syd Barrett, the founding member of Pink Floyd died a few days ago at the age of 60.

I will never forget that day in 1967 when I walked into an English import record shop on West 8th Street in Greenwich Village and I heard their first album "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn" playing. It was my first introduction to mind altering music with such songs as Astronomy Domine and Interstellar Overdrive. That day changed my taste of music forever.

Syd wrote most of the songs for that first album and a few for the second as rumor has it that excessive LSD usage left him in a catatonic state and the band was forced to fire him.

If you have never heard any of this early Pink Floyd you are truely missing some incredible music.

Many of Floyd's later songs were dedicated to Syd with songs such as "Shine of you crazy diamond" and "Wish You Were Here".

FYI, "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun" was written by Roger Waters and appeared on PF's second album "A Saucerful of Secrets". This album marked the debut of David Gilmour on guitar as he replaced Syd who was too strung out to play.

Roger that. I kinda always want to think Syd was there in the studio, if only in spirit.

Sad to hear he has left the studio for the last time.....

I would like to see Piper released in either SACD or DVD-A formats. I just upgraded my whole system and this Hi-Def sound is amazing.

Some great sounding HD sounds I am listening to these days are Pet Sounds* The Byrds Greatest Hits with McGuinn's 12 string Rickenbacker blowing you away and The Beatles "Love" .

Pet Sounds if one of my favs also. Saw Brian perform it at the Beacon last year and it was so beautiful to witness.

I am finally putting a 5.1 HT system together in the next two weeks and look forward to HD audio at last.
