Graphite for day to day surf casting, I like the light weight. I have two ten footers and one 12 footer for bait when I go there. Actually one of my 10 ft. graphite rods is a Lamiglas tri-flex, which is a mix of glass and graphite.
Fiberglass for throwing pencil poppers, can't beat the "whippy"action of the glass for working the pencils. I have one 9 footer which is undersized. Recommend 11 foot for glass for the south shore.

for what application??? graphite for most... I know there is a lot of talk on this board about 2 piece st croix rods and glass, but ... I dont know... there is a reason for all the R&D going on out there.. I use several rods all the time.. my go to 11fter for lures is a lami 132 1M. great overall rod, especially for Montauk and big water (very good for pencils too)..I can throw 1/2 bucks with it ( If I have to) and also 3.5 oz needlefish ( and everything in between) with no problem at all... my go to 10 ft for lures is a lami 120 1L. aweseom all around rod is very light and can handle any lure or fishin these waters!! 9 ft I like to use a lami ssb 108 3m (s-glass) still light and I use this glass with fireline so as not to have to much pressure that a rigid graphite would have in conjunction with fireline. too many hook pulls.
I think that using 11ft glass rods for everything might be a personal preference for some, but I would bet those people are in the vast minority of those who fish hard all the time.. the wasted energy of throwing a rod that heavy over the course of a tide is tremendous... dont get me wrong, I still have an s-glass fastened to my truck when there are breaking fish and I want some pencil popping fun.. but as my main rod, maybe 5 years ago, not anymore!!

I suppose it also depends on the shape and condition the individual surfcaster is in as well.:D
