Public meeting to be held at Suffolk County Community College Ammerman Campus in Selden

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) today announced plans to establish a task force of waterfowl hunters to help set annual waterfowl hunting season dates for the Long Island Zone.

The DEC will hold a public informational meeting on the waterfowl season setting task force process on Wednesday, July 19 from 7 - 8:30 p.m. at the Suffolk County Community College Ammerman Campus in Selden, NY. The meeting will be held in the Montauk Point room of the Babylon Student Center.

Once formed, the task force will meet in early spring to recommend a set of season dates for the coming year. DEC will provide guidance on the number of hunting days and other details that we expect to be allowed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service based on the current status of waterfowl populations. Task force participants will recommend a set of season dates within the expected federal guidelines for the youth waterfowl hunt weekend, as well as duck, goose and brant seasons.
A facilitator will run the season setting meeting. Task force members will discuss options and reach a consensus for the recommended dates. Each member of the task force should be familiar with waterfowl migration timing and movements in the area they represent and be prepared to represent the feelings of hunters in that portion of the Long Island Zone. DEC staff at the meeting will answer questions the task force might have, but do not take part in formalization of final task force season recommendations and suggestions.

DEC staff then will review the season recommendations and forward them to the agencys central office in Albany. The tentative dates recommended by the task force will be released to the public in June. In early September, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will announce the final guidelines for hunting seasons in each state and ask for the specific season dates selected for each zone.

Anyone with questions about these meetings or the waterfowl season setting process can call Lisa Masi at the DEC Wildlife office in Stony Brook at 631-444-0309.
