Newark N.Y. January 2006 Two of the country’s leading authorities on white-tailed deer habitat development and nutrition have teamed up to create the premier educational organization in the country. The new organization called the “Whitetail Alliance” is the brainchild of the Whitetail Institute of North America and NorthCountry Whitetails.

Dr. Craig Dougherty of NorthCountry Whitetails will serve as the Executive Director of the Whitetail Alliance. According to Dougherty, “The information needs of the whitetail enthusiast have changed over the past few years. There is a tremendous demand out there for “how to” information on habitat development, food plots, and deer nutrition. Five years ago the questions were very basic. Today they are quite advanced. It seems as though everyone is looking to upgrade their land management skills. The Whitetail Alliance was formed for just that purpose.”

The two companies behind the Alliance are similar not only in name, but in mission as well. “I founded the Whitetail Institute in 1988 out of sheer frustration at the lack of both product and information to grow and manage quality whitetails,” said Ray Scott, Whitetail Institute president. In the last 18 years we have come a long, long way to close that product and information gap thanks to an incredible staff that includes agronomists, whitetail nutritionists, and biologists. We are proud to be leaders in an industry dedicated to improving deer hunting through sound management of the resource.”

The Institute is credited with popularizing food plots and wildlife plantings nationwide and taking the mystery out of growing high quality deer forages. “From the very beginning”, said Institute vice president Steve Scott, “We knew that a big part of our mission was to translate the science of deer nutrition and agronomy into terms and practices that could be readily understood. We are always looking for better ways to communicate with the public.”

NorthCountry Whitetails showed up later on the scene but has made a big splash in a relatively short five years, especially in the northern U.S. Founded by Dr. Dougherty and his son Neil, the company has specialized in creating educational materials and field based learning experiences for quality deer management enthusiasts. The company is on the educational forefront with their best selling book “Grow ‘Em Right- A Guide to Creating Habitat and Food Plots” and their DVD, “Plant ‘Em Right”- How to Create Wildlife Food Plots”. (Both are now available in expanded 2nd editions.

But, NorthCountry’s greatest claim to fame is their hands-on educational programs conducted each year at their 500-acre Demo Center in Steuben County N.Y. Thousands of eager to learn whitetail enthusiasts have participated in food plot and habitat development education programs and tours over the past five years. NorthCountry’s innovative teaching programs have been featured in dozens of magazines and each year
