Anyone have any recommendations for a good book about surf fishing? I am new to the sport and would like to do some reading this winter. Too cold to fish anyway.

P.S. Went down to the Hudson today (Dyckman Pier in Upper Manhattan) and watched the icebergs float by.

NP,
See if you can find a copy of Surfcasters Quest by Roy Rowan, it's a good read.

NP,

Striper Surf by Frank Diagnault is the classic book on surf fishing

I'll second that. Striper Surf offers tons of good info, which is presented by Daignault in a very entertaining manner.

Definitely Striper Surf. This book can be utilized by surfcasters with any level of experience but is especially good for beginners because Daignault explains everything meticulously. In addition to being well written, it is also full of great pictures. One look at the cover and your heart will start pounding.

If its technique your after, then the "Ultimate Guide to Surfcasting" is what your looking for. With practice this book may add 1/3 overall distance to your casting. ...catch & release...then teach someone else & share the experience...enjoy!

C. Boyd Pfifer had a good book years ago with rigs, hooks etc. It's called the complete Surfcaster. It covers tackle. strategies and techniques for bait and plugs. Published by Nick Lyons Books.

Striper Surf is a good rerference. However, many of the areas it talks about have changed significantly over the years due to storms and while still worth a visit may not be as fishable as described in the book.

many of the reviews I have heard from personally and I admit I have not read it yet...said there were no real techniques or how to's inthis book...just a bunch of fish pics and some history about the angler.

IMO ..."Reading the Water" by Robert Post was by far the best (non istructional) surf fishing book. "Striper Surf" is good and "Night Tides" was also enjoyable....Great pics of large fish past and present. How To's are a tough call.....many books have been written but all mention the same techniques. Frank D's books are enjoyable and packed with info......if you fish The Cape. Its hard to apply his techniques here on the island where a 100 yard cast might put you in 6 - 8 ft of water, unlike the Cape where you can see 12 ft of crystal clear water right off the beach. Robert Moses and even parts of Jones Beach used to have water like that.........not anymore........
