To keep my sanity I have been sorta mapping out where I want to take my kayak this Spring, an area that I have never fished and hear is incrediable in spring is Jamaica bay. It seems to be made for a kayak with all those little islands with cuts. I started fishing some spots in the back of fire island inlet last year in late april and it was wild fishing-birds working on this flat in 1 foot of water with bass going wild! and best part is the boats were couldnt make it in there and they just had to watch me. Any other hot Spring Spots from a kayak?

I just learned there is a kayak launching spot at Levy Park on Merrick Road just East of Meadowbrook Parkway, this is the site of the old Town of Hempstead Landfill.
There is also a large fishing pier, where I am told there are some deep holes at the end and excellent fishing.
Anyway, I plan to give it a try this weekend, weather permitting, It looks like this ramp gives access to some nice back bay areas..:D

I am going to check it out on the map, I am sure that area back there is great...let us know how you do.

bassman, just a word of caution when using this ramp to really know the tide, very easy to get stranded if you try getting back on outgoing tide, nothing but mud in the creek.

Thanks Sou'easter, I have not had the chance to try there yet, bad weather, but I did speak to the Park Ranger there this weekend regarding the tides. He said the bottom hour of the tide is impassable, therefore creating a two hour gap to work around.
So planning around the tide shouldn't be too bad.

Have you tried kayaking or fishing there??

Haven't fished the Merrick area yet, but did put in there last year for a nice paddle around the bay. I know the fluke fishing is supposed to be good there, not sure about the bass. I'm focusing on the back of Moriches Inlet and the flats out in Shinnecock once the water warms more. Last year at this time a friend had great action out in Jamaica Bay using the fly rod. Just waiting for a break in the weather.
