DEC AND STATE PARKS SPONSORS SPRING FISHING, FAMILY FESTIVAL AT BELMONT LAKE

Festival Marks Start of DEC's Special Long Island Spring Trout Stocking Program

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), in cooperation with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP), "The Fishing Line" radio & television shows and Entenmann's Bakery, will hold the annual Spring Fishing Festival on Saturday, April 1 at Belmont Lake State Park, DEC Regional Director Peter A. Scully announced today.

"The Spring Fishing Festival is a great way to enjoy the outdoors and learn something about the great sport of freshwater fishing," Scully said. "The festival combines the opportunity to fish with a variety of children's activities to provide a rewarding family experience."

Rich Johnson, host and creator of "The Fishing Line" television and radio shows, said "We've been associated with this program from its inception in 1992 and are very proud to be part of it. This festival is a great way to get parents and kids together for a day of family fishing."

The requirement for a fishing license for anglers 16 and older has been suspended for this event. The vehicle use fee of $6 will be in effect.

Festival activities begin at 10 a.m. and include a fishing seminar by Mark Malenovski of Hooks & Brooks Guide Service. Fishing instruction, free fish cleaning services, loaner rods, and free bait will be available at the festival. Additionally, a display area will be set up by DEC and local fishing clubs.

Children's activities will also begin at 10 a.m. Children's activities will include an inflatable slide, temporary tattoos, and a casting contest. Children participating in the casting contest will have a chance to win some great prizes, which will be supplied by the Westbury Sports Authority and Orvis.

The festival is the highlight of DEC's special spring trout stocking program in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Prior to the festival, Belmont Lake at the State Park will be stocked by DEC. Upper and Lower Twin Ponds, Oyster Bay Mill Pond, Massapequa Creek and Reservoir, and 17 Suffolk County lakes will be stocked with trout by the DEC by March 30, providing excellent prospects for spring fishing in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. A second DEC stocking will occur by Mid-April.

In the event of rainy weather, call the DEC Bureau of Fisheries at (631) 444-0280 or Belmont Lake State Park (631) 667-5055 for event status. There is no rain date for this event.
