Viking Local Cod Action! Daily at 3 a.m.now! Local Cod Fishing - Monday March 14 Cod fishing was really excellent! We had a small group of people with between 70 - 80 fish. The pool winner was Mark Larocca of Shirley with 14.3 pounds, one of 5 cod he had for himself. Hi hook was Joe Cheng with 9 cod. Lou Mercieca of Queens had 7 cod up to 12 pounds. Captain Steven even got in on the action and had himself a 24.1 pound cod and a 16.9 pound cod in his 4 keepers!
Local Cod Wednesday March 16 - the cod action was red hot even though there were many, many with throw backs, Captain Steven says maybe 500! Joe Lewis Jones of the Bronx took the pool. James Whitten of Queens had 3 keeper cod and over 30 short cod including 7 double headers. Second place in the pool went to John Tkacsik of Brooklyn.
Local Cod Thursday March 17 - the action was a little slower than previous days, however the boat still had over 50 keeper cod and over 200 throwbacks. The weather looks good for the weekend. Local Cod Friday March 18 - Captain Dave reports a very slow day. We had about a dozen keeper cod, some ling and a lot of throw backs so there was at least some action. Matt Arnao of West Sayville (of the Wickpoint Tuna Club) caught an 8 pound cod for the pool, second place was Bob Feather of New Hyde Park (one of the Waldbaum's gang) with a 6.5 pound cod.
Local Cod Saturday March 19 - The Viking Star and the Viking Stariper both sailed for cod. Fishing was excellent in the afternoon with many rods bent with fish action! We started off the day with solid double header action as fast as you could catch them on the Viking_and Stariper (sadly only a handful of keepers were in with this am bite). At 11 o'clock the bite really turned on -and the bite was solid with keepers for the rest of the day, including a few triple headers.
Captain Steven said that it was the most action he has ever seen for the fleet in 20 years, fish were flying everywhere! On the Viking Stariper, Tomase Sanczento of Middle Island had an 21 pounder for first place in the pool, second place went to Fernando Ferreira of Southampton with his 18 pounder - Tomase, Fernando and their friend had 21 fish total in their cooler. On the Star, Gus Yarakes of Throgs Neck had a 12 pound cod for the pool and Scott Dominski of Sag Harbor had a 10 pound cod for second place.
