View Full Version : NY's 2004 Fluke & Porgy Stats Now In..Seasons Closing?

I just spoke with Capt. Dennis Kanyuck of the United Boatman’s Assoc. (UBA) and the Third Wave (May & June) numbers of fluke catch statistics are now in and they are NOT good and actually bordering on criminal.

The MRFSS survey says the following…it is preliminary and is not to be used for accuracy…but I’m sure they will end up using them anyway and since they do this we can use it to make assumptions…

They are trying to say:

Including the second wave (Mar & April in which we don’t fish because the season is closed) and the third wave (May and June) alone…MRFSS says we reached nearly 70% of the 2004 fluke quota already….

And in the first two weeks of porgy fishing and remember THIS…the porgy season was only open for two weeks in this Third Wave period…they say we have caught 27% of our porgy quota already...in just 2 weeks! If this holds true…and they use this…we will be shut down earlier than expected…and forget about next year...porgies will be 12 inches or larger, a shorter season and another split season.

They'RE also trying to tell us the MRFSS survey revealed that angler effort on party and charter boats…that’s the number of people aboard these vessels…INCREASED by nearly 40% over last year! Who are they trying to kid?

I would strongly suggest if anyone ever gets called by phone or stopped at the dock by any surveyor to just kindly say no thanks…divulge nothing of what you caught or did not catch and just walk away saying I AM NOT INTERESTED!

Good job-

By the time you can vote there may be no fishing allowed in NY--Keep sending those Emails to the proper people and fight for our right to fish!!!!!!

Attendence on party boats increased by 40%....Tell that to the boats in Montauk that are tied to the docks on beautiful days in July and August ..I know I was there and 50% of the party boats didnt go out because of not enough fares to cover fuel let alone turn a profit

that is exactly what the mrfss arent looking at and their not listening to the captains and finding out the real story

I wouldn't ignore one of those surveyors if they came up to me. I'd demand that they tell me who they will report the data to and then I'd rip them a new a-hole as to how horribly inaccurate that entire organization is and that they can stuff their paper and clipboard where the sun don't shine because that is the only place where it can be put to good use. I'd let out a season's worth of frustrations onto that poor slob who is for some reason just trying to do his job. Why anyone would take that job is beyond me. I want that job, I'll report all season long that nobody is catching anything ever and the party boats are all in dry dock.

I waited all these years to retire and now there won't be anything to fish for except searobbins and skates.
Why don't they wake up and realize we're only a drop in the bucket compared to the commercial guys.

Look out on the water every weekend at all the beautiful boats, I bet there are a lot of lawyers out there. If we could get some of them to come up with something we might have a chance. They don't pay attention to the common man no matter how much yelling you do.
Try to get SSI disability without a lawyer and you won't get no where.

Speaking of SSI and a lawyer...I have a friend who is 61 and disabled now and SSI won't give him a dime...he needs help...do you have a lawyer? Sounds like you speak from experience.

In the many years that I've been fishing, I've only seen 2 survey takers. It appears to me that they are college students looking to pick up a couple of bucks. They look like they could care less about the results of the survey. If that is the case, to get nasty with them, serves no purpose and accomplishes nothing.

RJ- Do you know of any regs., as far as catch and release, involving fluke, after the season is over. At this point, I haven't seen any.

The one time somebody asked me, it was an old man. Not like terminator sunglasses old, but old nonetheless. Not to mention he didn't seem like the type who liked fishing or fisherman. He seemed like one of those vegan types who oppose all types of killing and meat resources, etc. It was flounder season about four years ago now. My buddy was the only person out of three boats who caught any fish. He ended up catching five keepers and maybe two throwbacks.

So this casserole asks me how many fish we caught. I told him five thinking he wanted to know how many we kept. Then he says, "Well how many did you keep?" real snooty like. I was like "duh, we kept FIVE." "You kept all five?" he sounded shocked. I said "yeah a**hole, we kept all five. The bag limit is 11 we only kept five." Well that offended him (glad it did too) and he scribbled something and wrote five fish and walked away disgusted. I'm glad I cursed him too now that I see what they have done to us.

It might have been, depends on when and where you are speaking of. When people question my conservation habits, I tend to get a bit edgy and defensive. Constructive criticism is one thing, this old fart wasn't being constructive and his criticism was unwarranted. :D

I just started last week fishing for porgies and sea bass out of Captree. I think there are two boats going for them. After labor day the entire fleet will be forced to go for them, thats got to put a strain on the fish population.
I'm thinking of buying some viagra and fish for something else until they put a limit on that.

You may be surprised as to how many boats don't go for seabass and porgies outside. The following is my guess.
JIB, no. Whittaker, no. Rod, no. Island Princess, no. Gillen, no. Fishfinder, no. Tradewinds, no.
Speedy, ?. Gregory, ? Bobb-O ?
Laura Lee, Susan Ann, Captree Princess, yes.
There's a lot involved in switching over. Some boats aren't equipped, some are too slow, some aren't ocean boats etc.
Will be curious as to how close I am.

If they don't switch there's nothing else to go for. Maybe the will just sit under the bridge and say they are going for stripe bass.

Just to add some fuel to the fire, here are the actual numbers from a source I was reading today.

For May/June NY caught 535,000 fluke, a nice round number if you ask me. NY also caught 400,000 porgies. Hmm another nice round number. Are they sure we didn't catch 400,003 porgies? So let's see, porgy season was open for 16 days so that's 25,000 fish per day. The numbers seem to be getting rounder. NY fisherman are allowed 20 porgies per day so that means to reach these numbers we would need 1,250 anglers per day. Another surprisingly round number. So for the last 16 days of June, many of which were work days for the large majority of NY, everyday 1,250 fisherman maxed out on porgies. It also never rained, never got rough, and the fishing was perfect for 16 days. Where was I when all this took place? Furthermore, where did these "survey people" go to find all this out? If they actually were out and about taking all this data down on pad and paper, why won't they tell us exactly how they came up with these numbers?

If you ask me these numbers sound very formulated and hypothesized. They sound fake, phony, kaputz, garbage, b.s. and every other word I can't think of right now. Start writing to Pataki, Schumer and the Great Southern bandwagon fan now or else it may be too late to salvage next season. How does a 19" fluke and one per day sound to you all?

Our N.Y. representatives should be informed by registered, return receipt mail of exactly what is happening. They should be told that their failure to act on this, is equivalent to signing off on these bum Regs. and will very likely cost them votes from N.Y. fishermen. Maybe that's a language they can understand.

For the hell of it, I just did a little number crunching on the fluke side. 535,000 Fluke in 45 days (season opened May 15). That equates to roughly 3,900 fisherman per day catching a total of 11,900 fluke a day. What kind of weed are these guys smoking because I want some of it.

Biggie-

What if each angler caught only 1 fish /day-then we would have 11900 anglers/day-so the number is somewhere between that and your 3900--Not counting all the guys that got skunked-LOL

Big Keepers

Exactly. Thank you for making my point.

They basically make us out to be the best fishermen in the world. Nobody misses, everyone maxes out and the weather is always 78 and sunny. Gee sounds like heaven on earth. Then why the hell am I paying taxes if I'm dead?

Get ready guys... It's coming.
A quote from the Saltwater Fisherman.
The ASMFC has approved 2 draft addenda. The key word is approved. The plan is for public review and comment. Like it makes a difference.
Addendum 15 proposes to establish an allocation program for the increase (I did say increase) of approximately 1.3 million lbs in the 2005 commercial summer flounder fishery[B]
Where do you think these fish are coming from.
Although this doesn't affect us, in No. Carolina they are reducing the landings on southern flounder. The Recs. lose 35% and the Comms. lose 9 %. The Comms. are currently taking 85% and the Recs. about 3%.
This is a classic example of how recreational fisherman stand :!: :!: :!:
