I've been told that in the Southheaven park, up stream from Montauk Hwy, there's a dam or similar structure that crosses the Carmens River.
This past spring Lisa and I walked over a mile North through the park along the river, past all the camping areas, and still didn't find any structure like a dam or anything spanning the river.
Is there such a structure? How do you get them from shore?
Thanks.

I haven't been there for a year but this is what I remember. There is a dirt road that runs from where one pays to get in, along the river and leads to the different beats or entrances or whatever they are called. They are numbered. I seem to remember, though I may be totaly wrong that I parked at 3 but I could be mistaken. I waded up a little ways and had to get out of the water to get around what seemed to be the damn. Above that area is where there are the native brookies. There is a map available at the fee both. It was very beautiful there. When I went last year the water was about six inches deep.

I didn't think you could drive up past the pay booth (unless you were a camper). I'll check it out over the winter. Thanks.

OK this is how you get into the park to fish the river. From William Floyd Pkwy go west on Victory Drive (Rt 27 service road). After a bit you will pass the first park entrance on your right just beyond the lake. Keep going west until you get to the next park entrance. Enter here and follow the signs to the fisherman's check in station. Check in here and pay $2 for your fishing permit for the day. (Ask them for a map too.) Exit the park the same way you came in. On your way back towards William Floyd Pkwy, you will pass River Road. Turn left (north) on River Road. Drive along this road until you pass the campground entrance, then keep going until you see Gate A. Enter at Gate A and drive north on the unpaved road just inside the fence. The dam is near Gate C, but Gate A is the only open gate so you have to go into the park first then drive along the road inside to get to Gate C. At gate C turn left and follow this road a short way to a clearing where you can park. There is a trail there that leads to the river near the dam. You should have waders on when walking this trail as it gets wet and swampy and you can sink in up to your knees if you're not careful. Watch your step! I broke a rod here once. Upstream from the dam, its fly fishing only.
This is not the only place you can fish but it is a good place for a first-time visitor.
There are other access points at each gate as you drive north on that dirt road inside the park boundary. Good luck!
Great Reply!!:D That's what boards are about!
