My trip today went off without a hitch...except for a $100 speeding ticket (no points) for doing 52 in a 45! Even in NY we show more hospitality than that! Hit the water around 7:30 to light SW breeze about 8 o 10 which dropped in an out. My guide was Capt. George Gallager of www.spottails.com.

We fished the Cape Romain Wildlife Refuge. I started with the fly rod on the bottom of the dropping tide and found a few skittish fish but caught nothing. We tried a few different spots on shallow muddy flats in 1 to 3 foot of water. We never really did find the "tailing" reds I was hoping for.

We hit a few sots and I noticed a ton of baby mullet in the area and asked the captain why use the fly rod and tiny flies if there is so much bait. "Maybe we shold use a spoon?"... and he agreed and I tossed a gold Johnson silver minnow.

Over the next 2 hours I hooked 10 reds, caught seven and we kept three. Two for me and one for him (it was dying from getting the spoon in it's gills). The fish all ran 22 to 27 inches with one 19 incher....the slot here is 15 to 24 inches.

I was looking for tailing fish...but was able to see puffs of mud where the fish were...toss the spoon to the area and catch reds. I even got the knack fo it...figuring out wher they were going andin what direciton and started catching fish...even where we thought they may not be...

I had one juvenile that had a brilliant blue tail and five spots on one side and one on the other side.

I had a great time and the captain was a great guy to spend time on the water with. Lots of laughs and a very aimiable guy. Good friendly conversation and you could tell he tried every minute to make sure I was havnig a great time...which I was.

I will be posting the pics here and on the .com site when I get back.

Expensive outing RJ, can you write it all off as a business expense (including the speeder)? :D

Hope your mother's doing well.
