Hi all...just registered for this forum...just bought my first boat and geez do I have a lot of questions!!! In the Mt. Sinai area and looking for some good fishing spots to take the kids to in the spring.

Also looking for advise and instruction on lures vs. bait and what kinds. Spent my younger days surf casting off the South Shore catching flounder and fluke with worms from my back yard. Don't think the same thing will work here!!

Any advice is more than welcome!!!

If you are taking kids fishing you can't go wrong fishing for porgies if next year is anything like this year in the sound. They were literally everywhere hitting just about any bait. Fast action and scrappy little fighters, what more could you ask for when taking kids out. All you need is a bucket of shucked clams and some #2 porgy hooks, some 2 to 4 ounce sinkers and have at it. Porgy season opened on June 25th this year but check the opening date next year as it changes all the time. Fluke fishing along the sound beaches has been pretty good in the spring the last few years also. Some spearing (or sandeels in the spring) and squid will work, or small bucktails tipped with squid or spearing. Fluke season opened May 1 last year, but again, that may change so check in the spring. There's also good toggin, bass and blues, but that fishing is a little too detailed to go into here.

Ubt-I don't know where to start-but-I live in Mt.Sinai and keep my boat at the Stonybrook yacht club-its silly to go into a treatise now but come the spring email me and I'll clue you in as to what you need and wherer to go.You can't go wrong at buoy 11 outside of Port Jeff-or outside of Mt Sinai Harbor for starters-as Steve said porgy ,flounder and fluke fishing are a good and easy place to start and then graduate to blue striper and Black fish

Many thanks to those that replied!!! I can't tell you how pumped I am for next spring to get here!!! Right now, the boat is in my driveway. It's an '85 Renken and needs a little bit of work. Just about ready to close it up. Just want to get the bilge pumps working and all the electrical systems will be a GO!!!

starting the last week of April you can diamond jig bass just east of bouy 11 Port Jeff and they hang around there till the 3rd week of May. Fluke on Mount Misery shoal as the season opens are large in early May and usualy plentiful enough for the kids to catch as well. Unfortunatly their are 2 draggers that run through this area and cleaned it out the last two years in May so you need to hit it as the season starts. As the others have said when the porgie season started it became almost impossible to NOT catch them off Old Field Point.
