I was at jones feild 6 last weekend tiring myself out throwing everything in my bag. A married couple next to me made sandcastles with there children with a rod in a post casted out with a bunker chunk. checking the bait every 5 min or so and occasionally catching blues and skates. i on the other hand caught a cold. now if there were bunger to snag i would have done it but my question is does this make them surfcasters? or just fishermen? many others on the beach had their waders on just to cast some bunker get back on the sand and then wait and watch. i felt cramped and too concerned about their permanent lines in the water as i diligently tried to fool a fish onto my bucktail.
whats the deal? opinions please

p-man, I'm mainly a lure slinger but when discussing bait fishing with experienced bait fisherman they say they hold thier rods 100% of the time plus they are purposely fishing the beach structure. My .02 is whether your casting lures of soaking bait your surf fishing in the context you described ,however, the level of experience and knowledgable focus will differ among fisherman. I've fished Field six also and there is alot of room to spread out especially to the east, that should give you some elbow room if bucktailing. Good Luck.:)

I have found that 99% of the time, my best fishing is either way east or way west from the main lot at Field 6. I am also a firm believer that bass are conditioned to certain baits at certain beaches from all the bait all the time at certain beaches. Jones Beach Field 6 and Gilgo/Tobay for bunker and Long Beach with clams. Bass see and smell the same bait and sonetime large concentrations of it at these beaches and it is nearly impossible to plug a fish from there most of the fall.:)

Impossible to plug a fish from field 6?

That has not been my experience. I may use bait during hours of darkness, but poppers at false dawn, and tins in the suns light has produced for me there. I even caught a keeper fluke on a Magnum Rattletrap! The Cream/Red Creek Chub has caught bass and blues for me, and a kastmaster has caught weaks during the day.
