I've used them a lot over the past 4-5 months. They're very productive, but I prefer the former model -- the LONG-A.
These lures should be retrieved very slowly (maybe 1 turn of the reel every 2.5 seconds) so that the tail wiggles and creates the classic "V" wake behind it. Hold on when the fish strike! The bombers just tend to piss them off.
I like Chicken Scratch (yellow with dashed lines), but black is deadly too.
Good luck!

Funny you shoud ask that. My favorite lure in my bag is the YELLOW pencil popper. That and the parrot pencils produce the best for me...year round.

If you're sticking with the old style Long-A Bomber, upgrade the hooks to the next largest size, and leave the middle treble off. This does not affect the lure's action, and it's easier dislodging the hook from the fish you catch (hopefully bass) when there's one less treble to get in the way.

If you want to be able to cast any Bomber further than your nose, keep your mono under 20 lb., braided under 30 lb.
I use 50-pound Tuff Line braided line and have no problem casting anything. It is much better than power pro by a wide margin. Here is an e mail I received from a fisherman and it is just one of many I get weekly.
"Rich,
I know you have heard the stories about Power Pro breaking for no apparent reason. I was a dedicated Power Pro supporter until I found out the hard way that the stories are true-this line does break for seemingly no reason. I was blackfishing on Sunday using 30lb. test Power Pro. I had a nice thump and set the hook into a real decent fish. The fish took some drag and I had him up about 10-15 feet when the line broke for no reason. I used a palomar knot to connect it to my swivel and shock leader. The line was in great shape when I checked it about 10 minutes prior to the break. Obviously, I was VERY disappointed!
I heard you talk about line that you claim is superior to all other braid lines. However, I forget the name of the line. Could you please let me know what the name of the line is and where I can obtain some. I need to re-spool my reel-IMMEDIATELY!

If you use the "old" Bombers be sure to remove the belly hook (middle hook) and crush the barbs on the tail hook. You can even remove the tail hook too and just use the head hook. I call it a "safety plug" because with just 1 hook to deal with you don't have to worry about getting a barb in your hand (been there, done that). A bass will hit the head. Haven't had any problems with plug action. Seen many other casters using the same thing too.

I have personally had no trouble whatsoever with my power pro line breaking.. I have caught a pretty hefty amount of fish this year on the same spool of power pro 50lb test.. My folks have a place in Montauk (lucky me!!). and I have spent every weekend out there since August catching bass and bluefish without so much as loosing a lure or snapping my line for no reason. I have lost a few casting too close into a blitz of bluefish, but that is to be expected no matter what line you use. I think the trick is that I tie only plain old boring standard simple loop knots and attatch the leader to my line that way. I have seen the problems some of you are talking about, and I think the problem is the line is so strong it is breaking itself with the use of some of the more complicated knots that alot of fishermen tend to use. It seems to me that the more the line is wrapped around itself, the more it tends to break. I also know that the line should be tied when it is wet. Just my opinion, maybe I just lucked out.
I have been using braided lines a long time and everyone of them fomr Spider wire to Fire Line to Gorilla Braid (remember that one?) to Whiplash and now Tuff Line. No comparison...TUFF line is the king...the name says it all.

I will give it a shot. My spare spool needs new line. Is it as thin as Power pro??? I like the fact that the diameter of 50lb power pro is the equivalent to 8lb mono. I can cast it a mile. If it's similar I will give it a try. Your advice has never failed me before!! Thanks Rich. Tight lines.
It is just as thin...if not thinner than Power Pro

Had one black A-Salt with red eyes. Loaded my rod to launch it a mile and my bail drops down on the line on the forward stroke and "snap" kiss her good bye:( . I then thought does it float or does it sink? If anyone finds a black floating A-salt in the suds in Long Beach please drop me an email;)
It floats and I too lost a 2-ounce Gibbs yellow bottle plug a week ago today in Lido Beach because the barrel swivel to the leder split in half (oddball story).
You should switch over to a manual bail like I show folks how to do in my TV show or the seminars...then this would not have happened. I learned a long time ago my lesson.:)

I agree with the manual bail conversion.
I assume you're fishing with a Penn 704z. If so, the conversion will take you 5-10 minutes at tops.
It's well worth it, as you'll save your plugs and fall in love with the free feeling of casting without a bail.

Kid, Rj, I agree it's time to convert to manual bailess. I have a Penn 8500 SS and I assume it still would be similiar in time to convert to bailess as the Penn 704. Hoping for some stripers in the suds this weekend:)

I'm trying the manual bail conversion, and to me it's got pros and cons. In daylight and "warmer" weather it's fine and I can cast "blind folded". After the sun goes down is where I have trouble, when it's cold and I'm wearing neoprene gloves. After casting, my line loops around the bail post (?) and I've got to unwrap it. A real PIA in the dark, with gloves on. I guess practice makes perfect, but for now my after dark fishing will be with the training wheels on.
To me there are 2 keys to casting with bail. Don't over torque your cast. If you need to cast more than 100 yards, get a boat. The other, is to not lubricate your bail, just the springs so they don't corrode. The added friction by not lubricating will keep the bail from closing prematurely. Just don't forget to wash your reel after each outing.

Im in my sophomore year of surfcasting, using a 704z and 10' daiwa eliminator. i was wondering what kind of maintance i should do to my reel, andything i should do during the off season?
I also need to re-line my spool, any color line suggestions that work well in the surf? how about lb test?
in another thread rich said:
"You should switch over to a manual bail "
what does this mean and how do you do it?
are snap swivels the ever used when surfcasting when using plugs/swimmers/jigs/bucks?
thanks
